Private Pilot License - Helicopters

Minimum age: 17 years
Medical fitness: Category 3 medical certificate
Ground School: 40 Hours ( If you hold a Pilot Permit, Gyro Plane, Private or higher license in another category, reduce to 20 hours)
Flight Time: 45 hours in helicopters, 17 hours dual & 12 hours solo

17 hours dual includes;

• 3 hours cross-country flight time
• 5 hours instrument flight time ( 3 hours simulator )

12 hours solo includes:

• 5 hours cross-country flight time
• 100 nm flight from point of departure & include 2 landings ( included in cross country time)

Written Exams:

PSTAR

• Student pilot permit examination
• must be written prior to first solo flight
• passing grade 90%

PPHEL Private Helicopter Pilot License - written

• must complete all required ground school
• a minimum of 23 hours pilot flight time in helicopter
• passing grade 60%

PHRAC Private Helicopter Pilot License Alternate Category - written

• with a Pilot Permit, Gyro Plane, Private or higher type license
• must complete all required ground school
• a minimum of 23 hours pilot flight time in helicopter
• passing grade of 60%

Flight test:

PPHEL Private Helicopter Pilot License - flight

• must complete a minimum of 45 hours pilot time in helicopter
• Passing grade 70%

Commercial Pilot License - Helicopters

License & Rating Requirements

• Minimum age: 18 years
• Medical fitness: Category 1 medical certificate
• Ground School: 80 Hours (If you hold a private license in another category, reduce to 60 hours)
• Flight Time: 100 hours in helicopters, 55 hours dual & 35 hours solo

• 55 hours dual includes;
• 5 hours cross-country flight time
• 5 hours night flight time (2 hours to be cross-country)
• 10 hours instrument flight time
• note: these hours can be altered if holding a valid fixed wing license

• 35 hours solo includes:
• 10 hours cross-country flight time
• Minimum 2 hour flight from point of departure & include 3 landings ( included in cross country time)
• 5 hours night flight time
• 10 night take-offs, circuits & landings (included in night flight time)
• note: these hours can be altered if holding a fixed wing license valid for night flying

Written Exams:

PSTAR
Student pilot permit examination must be written prior to first solo flight passing grade 90%

CPHEL
Commercial Helicopter Pilot License - written must complete all required ground school a minimum of 50 hours pilot flight time in helicopter passing grade 60%

Flight test: CPHEL Commercial Helicopter Pilot License - flight must complete a minimum of 75 hours pilot time in helicopter Passing grade 70%
